100 Word Challenge: Dance Class

Velvet Verbosity's 100 Word Challenge wishes they all could be California Girls. This week's word is "Split", and this story is called "Dance Class".

I tried not to stare, but it was hard not to marvel at the physicality of what she made her tiny body do. She was so light I could carry her like a child, but the floorboards would still vibrate with force when she jumped, splitting her legs to an impossibly wide angle then landing precisely where she wished. When she finished, she came into the office. She smelled like sweat and effort, sharp and clean, her hair pulled back in a bun. My heart pounded happily.

"You don't mind driving me home?," she asked.

"Absolutely not," I said.

  1. I like the imagery here, your description of the floor vibrating and her scent. I was just wondering why she was doing jumping spits though.

  2. In my mind, I can see a dance studio that I knew when I was a kid in theater. It always surprised me - how much impact there was - how much force was used - in performing the Art of Dance. I used to see bleeding feet all the time.

    Wonderful job, here. Well done.

  4. @TaraR It's that picture you usually see in a magazine if they want to show you "generic ballet dancer", where they jump, split their legs wide, then land again with their feet together. I've seen it a million times, but it still seems impossible.

    @LceeL That always shocked me, too- such tiny people, yet you could feel the impact through the floor.

    @Teresa Thanks!

  5. I can see it: the girl going through the motions, perhaps with a bit of footloose going on :) Lost in her own motions, with the quiet observer.

    Well done
