In Defense of Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid

Tonight, the Philadelphia Eagles got waxed in Dallas, ending their season and being eliminated from the NFL playoffs once again.

Philadelphia sports fans, being the level headed, rational types that they always are, will soon be suggesting calm, sensible remedies like firing the coach, hanging the quarterback in effigy, and burning down the stadium and salting the ground that it stands on.

This is probably a little extreme.

The primary criticism is that McNabb and Reid have not won a Super Bowl, which is indisputably true. It is imagined that McNabb or Reid have some sort of character deficiency or lack of passion that prevents them from doing so.

However, neither have Jim Kelly, Dan Fouts, or Dan Marino, who were all Hall of Famers.

Yes, the Philadelphia fan base wants a Super Bowl-I've been a Boston Red Sox fan since 1978. I understand waiting for your team to win a title. But the best way to win a title is to make the playoffs again and again, and hope the bounces go your way. That is precisely what Reid does, but he's not going to receive the credit he deserves.

  1. I near cried when my Ducks lost the Rose Bowl, but they earned their rings and it could have gone either way. I am also a Red-Sox-in-waiting fan as you know, Michael.

Its an emotional issue to be sure, but kind of like a parent who blames their kid's friend when they get into trouble when they need to be holding their own child responsible for his actions. I am sorry your Eagles lost. I think losing is punishment enough. They will get back up again. I'm glad you are keeping your faith. When it does happen... it will be very sweet.

  2. I don't care about football, honestly. Most of my interest is in the citizens of the city where I live being a little less pissy. My true football team, if I have one, is New England, and they just got bounced as well.

I'll certainly continue to watch, and probably root for New Orleans. If ever a city deserved a win, they do.

  3. I mostly wrote this because I get tired of hearing criticism of two men who work very hard, and perform better than most of their peers, and can't get the recognition they deserve.
