I don't understand how this is anybody's business. The controversial "Ground Zero" mosque has raised the ire of some, I guess, because...well...I don't know. If you buy a piece of land, you should basically be able to build whatever the hell you want on it. It's somehow holy to build an office tower on the Ground Zero site, but not ok to build a religious building a couple of blocks away?
The single biggest argument we have against the Muslim world is our tolerance, our acceptance of people of all faiths. It drives the fanatics crazy when we do this, which is why we should do it constantly, if only just to irritate them.
My husband and I are arguing over this.
ReplyDeleteMy POV: It's your land. You bought. You do whatever you want with it as long as it follows the building code. However, it is in very poor taste to build a mosque with the destruction zone where Islamic extremists killed thousands of Americans. It is the similar poor taste as when the KKK has their parades down MLK Jr Blvd.
It's not illegal. It's just in very poor taste.
Isn't it in poor taste to build a temple to Mammon there, too? (The Conde Nast building they're putting up on the site.) Isn't it in poor taste to have strip clubs there too?
ReplyDeleteIf it's hallowed ground, then we hallow it. We don't make money off of it. (See: Gettysburg) There should absolutely be a memorial there, and there will be. But if we're going to let people make money there, and we are, then we lose the ability to claim it as a sacred place.
We're perfectly okay with everybody doing whatever they want in this area-EXCEPT THE MUSLIMS. That's racist. It's also stupid-it makes Bin Laden's argument for him.
