Game 62: Slinging In The Rain

Dice K took the hill yesterday against the Phillies, battling both the weather and the tiny dimensions of Citizens Bank Park. Facing the marvelously named Antonio Bastardo (aka Tony Bastard), Dice K struggled, going only 4 innings, albeit having to endure a long rain delay in the middle. Boston's 5 early runs off of Mr. Bastard held up in a 11-6 win. Josh Beckett takes the hill today to look for a sweep.

  1. What fun!

But I caught a couple of stories in the sports section that made me go "huh?" So...

    Two baseball questions Michael...
What is this about Joe Girardi saying that Brad Penny purposely hit Alex Rodriguez' back with a pitch?

    Did you see that happen?

And what is the "slow play" fine that they put on Jonathon Papelbon? Is this new? I have never heard of it before... not that I'm an expert.

  2. Ananda girl:

Girardi did accuse Penny of throwing at Pay-Roid, Penny denied it, but in my opinion, Penny did hit him on purpose. With that being said, I say stop bitchin' Joe! The Yankees have been plunking Sox players all season long....heck, Jaba the Punk has hit Youkilis on pourpose on many occasions over the last 2 or 3 years. Joe the hypocrite should just shut his pie-hole and let it be.

I've never heard of anyone else getting fined for the slow play thing before either. I guess he has 2 minutes and 30 seconds to get ready to throw his first pitch from the time he is announced. I guess he was still tossing his warmup tosses after the 2:30 was up. I don't know, sounds a little picky to me, especially when the fine is only $1000.

  3. Slow play is one of those innovations they came up with to try and trim some time off the game. It's hardly ever enforced-I don't know why they're picking on Paps for it all of a sudden.

As for Penny-who knows. It's not like he has shown an abundance of control. There is a pretty long tradition, when a star player is hit, of the player's team accusing intent, and the pitcher's team denying it.

This is one way the old school had it right-we nail ARod, then Youk gets one in the back, and then it's over and we play some baseball. With all the warnings, you can't retaliate, and it's gotten kind of crazy.

  4. Thank you both for your answers! I thought it was pretty picky too... the slow pitch thing.

And I thought the whine over ARod getting one in the back was sour grapes. Heeheehee That laugh is because they have reason to feel sour.
