Interesting Point about Money and Baseball

"And they've got every right to be worried by the Yankees' financial juggernaut that will only become more imposing in the coming years."

-Rob Neyer, reacting to Larry Lucchino's statements about the new Yankee Stadium providing them with a huge new revenue stream.

True, but as always, it's not entirely the money-Boston's payroll was lower than Detroit's and the Mets' this year-it's how intelligently you spend it. And Tampa's still whipping our ass.

  1. Baseball, along with many other things, all depends on the make up of the group involved. You can pay a ton for a bunch of self minded egos and get nothing, ie the Detroit Tigers.

I am a Steelers fan for life and I have found that they do not go out and spend the big bucks on free agents every year, nor do they usually bow to demanding free agents in house. They somehow manage to be one of the more consistent franchises around year after year.

  2. Similar to the Eagles, too.

I hear Philly fans all the time moaning about this or that free agent departure, and I try to remind them of the remarkable run of success this franchise has had-you could be rooting for the Lions, after all, who haven't been relevant since the Reagan Administration.

There is a value to athletes, baseball and football-and we ignore that, when considering transactions-at our peril.

Look at a player like Polamalu- a local icon, to be sure. Vivid, passionate player, easy to identify, even in the psuedo armor NFL players wear.

Yet do you have any doubt that, when the value equation turns the other way, they will cut him loose?
